Telangana - This is an issue which has rocked the center and the whole of Andhra Pradesh. since quite a number of days. This is an issue which has led to wide protests and agitations by the Telangana people not just in the T-region but even by those studying/working in different countries. Coming to a conclusion doesn't seem like an easy task. Neither does it mean that all the agitations by the people of Telangana region for the separate state will go down the drain nor does it mean that a few agitations will win them a separate state.
The demands of people of the Telangana Region are quite genuine to be frank. People watching news all over the world might be wondering, 'why do they suddenly need a separate state? Everything has been fine over these years'. But probably they're failing to know the reason and the situation behind it. There is a long history behind Telangana. 50 years! Ever since Andhra Pradesh was formed.
Separate AP was formed 53 years ago and since then the state has had 15 Chief Ministers of which just 4 have been from the Telangana Region. Way back in 1956, Telangana was merged with Andhra with much reluctance from the T-region people. It must be noted that Telangana has been under the control of the Nizams and existed as a separate entity since 400 years. And please note, actually it's quite evident, ages before India's independence.
Coming to the Geographical side, Telangana will be bigger than 17 other states in India. This strengthens and boosts their demands if someone opposes going by the size.
Right from the day one of formation of Andhra Pradesh, people of telangana have voiced against it. People fighting for 'United Andhra' say formation of separate Telangana is another political gimmick. It was Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) that started the movement. The Telangana Movement! People say, 'we know not what KCR had in mind. maybe his own political benefits'. 'We supported him because he was fighting for separate Telangana state but once we sensed things are taking an odd shape, students stepped into action. Our support has always been for TELANGANA and not for KCR'.
The government should not forget that when KCR put an end to his hunger strike, students revolted against him with utter disgust. 'Shiva yatra of KCR' was carried out within the Osmania Campus and in some places of Telangana, his effigy was burnt. Sensing trouble, KCR '''HAD''' to resume his hunger strike. Please note, he was """forced""" into it. He had no other option.
Telangana movement - An agitation which has been carried forward by students and the people of the region and not any political party. KCR was the main focus of media just because he started it (not with much seriousness though). Later on, he had to.
Recently I came across an articles where the writer mentioned, 'Looking at the Andhra Pradesh assembly, TRS doesn't have a major share though Telangana Region accounts for 119 of the total assembly seats. TRS was able to win just 10 seats in the recently held elections. TRS represents less than 10% of the total Telangana Region therefore TRS must also be given only that much importance'..
Please remember, 'This is an agitation by the students and the people of the Telangana Region and has got nothing do with KCR". Just because the party 'Telangana Rashtra Samithi has the word 'TELANGANA' in it doesn't mean they will be ruling the state once the region wins what it has been fighting for since more than half a century. The center shouldn't forget that there are excellent leaders from the Congress, TDP and BJP even from the telangana region and they all together account for 119 seats of the total assembly seats.
There has been lots and lots of violence following the center's statement that it'll push and plan to carve out 'Telangana'. Many of the arguments against separate statehood for Telangana have been emotive and out of logical thinking. People who have no idea why Telangana people want a separate state should go through the history of Telangana.. Let me brief you a bit on it.
After India got its independence, Telugu people were divided into 22 districts. 9 of them in the Telangana region, 12 in the Andhra Region (Earlier called Madras Presidency) and 1 in Yanam.
On the other hand, Hyderabad "state" has a princely history and for the first time it enjoyed democracy when elections were held in 1953.
Potti Sriramulu fought for a separate Andhra state and was successful following which the central government had appointed SRC - State Reorganization Commission. SRC was against the merging of Telangana and Andhra(carved out of Madras Presidency). It was left for the people of the Telangana region to take a decision. Eminent leaders and the public felt that the merger would mean a disaster to the people of the Telangana Region so they ruled out the idea.
But in the end, the central government had come up with the 'Gentelmen's Agreement' as the solution to all problems. According to the Gentlemen's agreement, assurance was given to the people of Andhra as well as Telangana on various things.
Ex: Distribution of expenditure between Andhra and Telangana would be equal.
This is one point of the 'Gentlemen's Agreement'. Now just think for a minute and answer yourself. 'What development has been there in Telangana?'
Hyderabad has been developed big time. It is now a place where IT industry has been investing. But on the other hand there hasn't been any development in the remaining telangana areas? Railway connectivity has been zero compared to Andhra. Even though 70-80% catchment areas of the Krishna and Godavari are in Telangana regions, telangana farmers hardly get water. No irrigation projects have been taken up in Telangana. Why?
Whereas in Andhra projects worth thousands of crores have been taken up. One example is the polavaram project and various other dams in the east and west godavari districts.
People of Andhra claim Hyderabad belongs to Andhra Pradesh and not Telangana. See, basically it lies in the Telangana Region and the fact is a fact is a fact. The Andhra Pradesh government has invested a lot on Hyderabad and not in the nearby districts which are all just a few hours drive away from hyderabad. This has resulted in increased cost of living not just in hyderabad but also in the neighbouring districts. The farmers and the local public in these districts haven't been able to support themselves.. highly priced commodities, no water, no educational facilities, less jobs (mostly dominated by people of andhra). All this has led to this agitation.
People of Telangana cannot keep quiet for too long.
One more point in the 'Gentlemen's Agreement' which was signed prior to the merging of Andhra and Telangana states that, 'The existing educational facilities including Technical Education in Telangana should be secured to the students of Telangana and further improved'.
Can you justify this? You cannot. If you are a student studying in the Telangana region then ask yourself, 'how many of your classmates are from the Andhra Region?'. The answer would be 'more than 50%'. This itself is quite evident to prove how badly the people of Andhra region have benefited by suppressing the people of 'Telangana Region'
Here's another point from the 'Gentemen's Agreement'.
"Since , however, it has been agreed to the representatives of Andhra and Telangana that the expenditure of the new state on central and general administration should be borne proportionately by the two regions and the balance of income should be reserved for expenditure on the development of Telangana area"
Show me the development in the Telangana Regions except for in Hyderabad. Any irrigation projects? Any development programmes?
My sincere request to people who blindly say, 'United Andhra' and all those from other states who have settled here.
'Speak to your conscience and listen to what it says. The people of the Telangana Region have been surpressed right from the day 'ANDHRA PRADESH' was formed by merging 'Telangana' and 'Andhra(carved out of MADRAS)' in 1956. The people of Telangana had been doubtful even then about the developments in their region but they got carried away by the 'Gentlemen's Agreement of Andhra Pradesh' which has been a 'breach' of 'Agreement'.
